NASA MODIS Image of the Day: November 26, 2008 - Seasonal Color Change in Northern California

Images

This set of images, both captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite shows the contrast in seasonal coloration in northern California.

The main image shows the region on November 16, 2008.

If you move your mouse over the image, you’ll see the same area on September 1, 2008. The Sacramento Valley area in particular is very green in September – but the bright greens are darker and more muted in November. Other seasonal changes include snow in some of the higher regions, like the Sierra Nevada mountain range on the eastern side of the state. (That’s Lake Tahoe on the eastern side of the mountains – the lake lies right on the California/Nevada border.) The San Francisco Bay is visible near the bottom of the image on the western coast of California. Thanks to Fred Blatt for looking through the Rapid Fire data and suggesting this image set.
