Nobody can predict when an Earthquake will strike. The only thing left is disaster mitigation and disaster management, to reduce the number of victims and to help the rescue teams. For both, satellites can contribute a lot, from identifying risk areas to assessing the extent of damage.

This TV Exchange documents how imagery from the French Spot-5 Eartyh observation satellite was used in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami, to establish damage assessments and subsequently direct humanitarian aid to those places in Thailand where it was most urgently needed.
