Launched last January, the Deep Impact spacecraft is approaching comet Tempel-1 for a rendezvous that could prove to be spectacular. 24-hours before closest approach, a one-meter-long, 360-kilogramme projectile will separate from the Deep Impact mother craft an impactor released into the comet’s path for a planned collision onto the icy-body’s sunlit side in the early morning hours of 4 July.
NASA’s flyby spacecraft will observe the collision from a distance of some 500 kilometres. But the full science picture will be provided by a coordinated campaign of observation on Earth. A global network of space and ground observatories will all be pointing towards comet Tempel-1, with European facilities playing a significant role. The European Southern Observatory, ESO, will direct its 7 telescopes in Chile, currently the most powerful on Earth, towards the event. NASA and ESA spacecraft will also contribute amongst them
the Hubble and Spitzer telescopes, ESA’s XMM-Newton X-ray observatory and even Rosetta, in a unique position to follow the impact all have been programmed to obtain a maximum amount of additional data on this unprecedented event.
Today’s Exchange provides a preview of the event, from a European perspective, using NASA material released last week plus newly produced ESA and ESO material on the Deep Impact mission.
