CRYOVEX stands for Cryosat validation campaign: scientists ensuring that the data Cryosat will send back to Earth actually correspond to the thickness of the ice sheets at the Earth’s poles.

To this end, scientists have been measuring ice cover and composition on the ground at various places in Greenland, and compared it with readings from a sister altimeter to that on Cryosat, mounted in an aircraf that passed over the measurement sites.

Today’s Exchange provides an overview of the campaign in Greenland recorded in September 2004, featuring not only the work of the scientists in one of the harshest environments on Earth but also new computer animations and sound bites by CRYOVEX coordinator Malcolm Davidson from ESA.
