Space Elevator: May 2006

LiftPort Group Unveils 'LiftPort -- The Space Elevator: Opening Space to Everyone,' A New Book on the Science and Social Impact of Building the First Elevator to Space.

Compiled by LiftPort, the new book is an exploration of both the scientific and social aspects relating to the development of the LiftPort Space Elevator, as told by a collection of nearly 40 leading authors and experts on science and space.

At the International Space Development Conference happening right now in Los Angeles, Ben Shelef of the Spaceward Foundation confirmed that the 2006 Space Elevator Competition will be held the weekend of October 19-22 in Las Cruces, New Mexico in conjunction with the X Prize Cup.

Last year the inaugural X Prize Cup demonstration attracted 12,000 people to the event and this years event is expected to attract even more. The first two days of the X Prize Cup will feature a summit with the world’s leading figures in the field of personal spaceflight and is limited to 300 participants. Details of this summit are expected within the next month from the X Prize Cup organisers. On October 21 & 22 is where the action will take place with over 20 rocket-powered launches expected.

The annual International Space Development Conference starts this Thursday through Sunday in Los Angeles and will feature 15 talks and 2 panels on the Space Elevator. Speakers include Brad Edwards, Ben Shelef, Tom Nugent, Geoff Landis, Blaise Gassend and many more. There will also be space elevator mock up by the SpaceWard Foundation and an update on the Space Elevator Games.

The conference is hosted by the National Space Society and the Planetary Society and I expect there will be a good turnout, perhaps more than 700 people. Other featured speakers include;

Buzz Aldrin
Apollo astronaut

Shana Dale
Deputy Administrator, NASA

Burt Rutan
