Scott Parazynski Everest Update: 1 April 2008 - Tengboche, Nepal

Keith Cowing 1 April 2008 9:30 am EST: I just got a satellite phone call from Scott in Nepal. He and his team are currently in Tengboche (altitude: 3,867m - 12,687ft) where it is now evening. They have been resting in Tengboche while their bodies acclimate to the altitude. Tomorrow morning (2 April) they will depart for Dingboche (alt: 4,530 m - 14,800 ft). Once there they will rest again to continue their process of acclimatization to ever increasing altitude.

While in the Tengboche region they visited the Tengboche Monastery where the had the chance to meet the abbot, Tengboche Rinpoche, a high ranking lama. Scott and his team were given a blessing by Tengboche Rinpoche to climb Mt. Everest. This included a katia (scarf) and a red cord to wear around their necks until they safely return from their climb.

Scott also reports that they had their first snow storm - a dusting actually - and that they expected to be above the tree line for the first time on tomorrow's trek out of Tengboche.

He also reports that his team is upbeat and energized.

His next report will be in a day or so.
