1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Policy
This document defines explicitly, or by reference, the Space Shuttle Program (SSP) authorized requirements to be implemented on the STS-300 Launch on Need (LON) Crew Rescue flight. Products generated to satisfy these requirements shall meet the schedules defined in the Flight Definition and Requirements Directive (FDRD), NSTS 07700 Volume III, and in the appropriate Integration Plans (IP's).
1.2 Flight Objective
The primary objective of the Launch on-Need (LON) Crew Rescue flight is to return a stranded STS-114 crew of 7 from the International Space Station (ISS) safely to earth within 90 days of this declared contingency. The LON flight would utilize the STS-121 vehicle (OV-104)/payload configuration without any payloads. The minimum turnaround from LON callup is 35 days. This is driven by pad turnaround with only one pad available (which is the case for '04 and early '05), the standard Flight Design I-Load Uplink/Day of Launch (DOL) processes, and training requirements.
The payload bay will be configured without any payloads, but some residual cargo integration hardware may remain on the LON flight. The crew compartment will be configured with additional seats to support the return of up to 11 crewmembers.
