Earth: May 2013



The ISS SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System or ISERV - a camera aboard the International Space Station - captures an image of her hometown. ISERV was designed and built at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.


This image shows northwestern Crete, the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, some 250 km long and 40 km wide.


After rapid intensification overnight, Hurricane Barbara is poised to cross the Mexico coastline near Tonala in Chiapas State.


Driving dust blanketed the Persian Gulf in late May, 2013. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of the event on May 16 as it flew over the region.


Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) photographed this striking view of Pavlof Volcano on May 18, 2013. The oblique perspective from the ISS reveals the three dimensional structure of the ash plume, which is often obscured by the top-down view of most remote sensing satellites.

This Landsat image from 9 September 2010 features the Clearwater Lakes in Canada's Quebec province. Located to the east of the Hudson Bay, what appears to be two separate lakes is actually a single body of water that fills two depressions. The depressions were created by two meteorite impacts, believed to have hit Earth simultaneously up to 290 million years ago.


NASA's new Earth-bound rover began testing on the Greenland ice sheet this week. GROVER, which stands for both Greenland Rover and Goddard Remotely Operated Vehicle for Exploration and Research, is an autonomous, solar-operated robot that carries a ground-penetrating radar to examine the layers of Greenland's ice sheet.

Dust plumes blew off the coast of Namibia in early May 2013. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite captured this natural-color image on May 5, 2013. Parallel plumes blew toward the southwest, many of them coalescing into larger plumes over the Atlantic Ocean.
