NASA SLPRA Fluid Physics Workshop

Date: 16-17 October 2019

Location: NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH, US,

Dear Colleagues,

On October 16-17, 2019, NASA SLPRA Fluid Physics Workshop will be hosted by the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. This event will bring together scientists and engineers from academia, industry, and other government agencies to provide recommendations to NASA on exploration-related microgravity challenges in multiphase systems and thermal transport processes. The president’s space policy directive on reinvigorating America’s Human Space Exploration Program for the United States calls for leading the return of humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and utilization, followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations. In response, this event will address areas that enable human expansion across the solar system. Potential topics of interest for the workshop include:

·         Water Recovery

·         Heat Pipes

·         Boiling and Condensation (as it applies to space power, cryogenic propellant, and thermal control)

Each session will be led by a chair and co-chair and accompanied by a NASA facilitator. The purpose will be to promote discussion on current gaps in understanding of relevant low-gravity issues, which if resolved, would lead to improved system performance or contribute to a better understanding of fluid phenomena in space systems. Each breakout session will capture their ideas into their own summary document, which will be combined into one workshop report and submitted to NASA. Emphasis will be placed on concepts that can improve system efficiency or reduce system mass and align well with NASA’s exploration missions. The aim of the workshop is to take the most relevant ideas from the workshop report as the basis for a NASA Research Announcement (NRA), which will lead to new fluid physics experiments on the ISS.

NASA plans to issue a request for information (RFI) to solicit input that will assist organizers in the development of workshop content. Instructions for submitting an RFI will be detailed in an announcement issued at a later date.

All interested scientists, researchers and managers are invited to participate. More information about the workshop, registration, and contact details can be found at the website:
